Pope Francis Urges Global Peace in Christmas Message
In his annual Christmas message during the midday “Urbi et Orbi” blessing, Pope Francis delivered a powerful call for global peace and an end to violence. Speaking from the central loggia of Saint Peter’s Basilica to crowds gathered in Saint Peter’s Square, the Pope emphasized the significance of Christmas in bringing joy, hope, and peace to a world marred by sorrow.
The Pontiff highlighted the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem as a source of hope, stating that despite the current “sorrow and silence” in the world, the eternal Word of the Father has made its home among us. Pope Francis underscored the need for humanity to embrace God’s tender love, which brings about joy, renews hope, and bestows peace.
Addressing the present-day challenges, the Pope lamented the plight of innocent victims, particularly children, who suffer in various ways, including war and desperation. He called for a resounding “yes” to peace and a firm “no” to war, emphasizing the detrimental impact of armed conflict on societies.
Specifically, Pope Francis expressed concern for the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine, urging an end to military operations and a resolution to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He also prayed for peace in other troubled regions, including Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, Ukraine, and parts of Africa.
As the world ushers in the Christmas season, Pope Francis implored people to “welcome Jesus” and open their hearts to the Prince of Peace, echoing the prophetic words of Isaiah in bringing good news, binding the brokenhearted, and proclaiming liberty to captives.
